Vaginal MRSA

I have just been diagnosed with vaginal MRSA. Its all a bit confusing, not helped by my doctors poor english.
I came of the depo injection two years ago and had a coil fitted. Due to withdrawing from the depo I have had messed up periods. However two years on they hadn't cleared up, so I went back to the doctor who took a swab.
From the test results I was put on antibiotics, without being told what was wrong or seeing the doctor again. This didn't clear it up so I went back and was told I had MRSA. I am now on Flucoxacillin for 10 days and suddennly my boyfriend has to take some antibiotics as well.
I am feeling confused on two points.
1. WHy wasn't I told straight away that I had MRSA and why wasn't my boyfriend told to get himself checked out as well. Surely if there are major issues with the spread of MRSA they should be dealing with differently.
2. How serious is this? I am 27 year old who hasn't had children yet. Can this affect my fertility? Should I have the coil out?

The main issue here is that flucloxacillin is the wrong antibiotic for treating MRSA, you need to go back to your doctor (or find another one) and tell her.

This is not serious and will not harm your fertility.

I soon realised it is the wrong one - I have an appointment with another doctor today.

Who is to say that the particular strain of MRSA is resistant to flucloxacillin??? You will only be able to tell through sensitivity testing and not over the internet.

Because it's Meticillin Resistant Staph aureus (MRSA) and Meticillin is the equivalent in the labs to Flucloxaxillin in clinical practice

am i right in thinking that flucloxacillin is one of the broad spectrum antibiotics given to anyone who presents with an infection that has'nt yet been specifically diagnosed ? if so then are'nt the prescribers of this drug making the patient more susceptible to contracting MRSA ~ especially if they had not done the sensitivity tests to ascertain whether or not the patients infection was resistant to which ever particular drug

Flucloxacillin is often the first antibiotic given for skin/tissue infections. Yes MRSA is resistant to it but most organisims causing these infections are not MRSA. If the infection does not clear up then a swab may be taken to test for sensitivities and then an alternative antibiotic can be given. It is important to remember that MRSA in the community is still rare.

flucloxacillin is also given for more then skin/tissue infections
thank you for your information re MRSA being rare in the community although if you are referring to the initial postee then i would hazard a guess they are from across the pond where CA-MRSA is pretty rampant
