I had three SWAB's taken yesterday for MRSA

Hi everyone,

It's Geraldine here < yes I am a worry wart> but I do find all of your advice most helpful :)

I just wanted to let you all know that yesterday I had three swabs taken for MRSA.

One taken from nose, another from my throat and a further one from my groin area.

Does anyone know if this is the normal procedure prior to surgery & admittance to hospital? if so, how long will it take for results to come back.

Thanks ,

Gerrie

depends i guess on which hospital you use ~ i had my pre-op done yesterday and they only took 2 swabs nasal and the perinium (spelt wrong) one of my other friends who had pre-ops the beginning of the year had nasal, under arm and perinium so i do think it really depends on which hospital you go to i was told it could take up to one week for the results to come back
best wishes

Nasal, perinium, underarm and groin in my past experience.

Although they didn't bother to check my late mother other than in her wound site and she was in fact colonised when she was discharged from hospital leaving her open to reinfection should she require any further invasive procedures.

Many thanks , Bev in wishing me luck for my results. I will definately keep you informed! My fingers crossed I am clear of MRSA, but if not the pre-assessment nurse told me that she would have to send me home with a shampoo and some kind of antibiotic prior to surgery date & that they would cancel surgery until I am cleared of MRSA?

I certainly do appreciate everyone's help in this forum. You are a great bunch of people who suffer or know someone who has suffered from MRSA & are a good support net work for myself and others who suffer from MRSA.

again thanks,

Geraldine

Geraldine, that is exactly what my son has always been told prior to elective surgery. He has always tested clear and the surgery has gone ahead as planned. Hopefully, you will be tested clear and can confirm that it is not the case that 'once infected with MRSA, you can never be rid of it', which is a worry that surfaces sometimes.

I had two swabs taken, groin and nasal. The results came back positive for me. Surgery was cancelled and I have to attend hospital for a prescription.

I will wait tomorow to ask the nurse a whole ream of questions on the subject.

Hi Rob,

How long did it take for the pre-assessment nurse to inform you about your swabs prior to surgery? I had my swabs taken on Monday 18th September 06 and no reply from the nurse about my results and my surgery is scheduled soon.

Thanks,

Gerldine

how did the nurse contact yoy by phone or letter in the post please?

Sorry for the delay.
I had the pre-assessment swabs on Monday 18th Sept and my op should have been friday 22nd Sept. The op was cancelled due to me flying to australia in a month and they were worried about DVT. Anyhow, as I got home from work on friday 22nd, there was a message on my answerphone to ring pre-op assessment ward asap. I got hold of them and they told me on the phone that they wouldn't have been able to do the op because I am a carrier of MRSA. I have to go to the hospital today Monday 25th for creams and scrubs.

Back from the hospital. I have been given Mupirocin 2% nasal ointment to be applied three times per day. Also Aquasept (2% triclosan) skin cleanser, to be used in the shower twice a day. Treatment is for 5 days, then back next monday for more swabs!

Hi Roger,

It is now 8 days since I had my mrsa swabs and still no one has contacted me so maybe I am lucky this time. I was told a while ago that I was a carrier of MRSA as I had a bladder infections and they told me what antibiotics I could take to clear MRSA.
I went to the hospital today and was told that I have early stages of glucoma and that the specialist will see me again in two months after my brain tumor is removed early October. So not very good news to report :(

I just pray that my mrsa is negative & that I have no hiccups ( Major problems ) with my upcoming surgery at a London Hospital to remove a tumor from my frontal lobe of brain stem. I am going to have a crainotomy

I just pray I do not contact MRSA again as I am not sure if it ever does leave one's body? I have my own doubts and fears?
Wish you all the best,
Gerrie
