Extreme joint pain after mrsa

I had back surgery in May 08. Got out of hospital after 12 days and @ 2 weeks later back in the hospital getting my wound opened back up so they could irrigate down to my spine due to confirmed MRSA. Left the hospital after 2 days. @ 1 month later started having severe back and left leg pain again. Well, back in the hospital to get opened up for the 3rd time for the same thing. Left the hospital after 3 days with a pic line in my right arm. Had to do IV antibiotics myself for 6-8 weeks and then an addittional 6 weeks of pill antibiotics. Blood work all checked out fine, doctor took me off all meds and told me to return in 6 weeks for check up. @ 3 weeks later I am having severe joint pain especially in my fingers, toes and left wrist area. I told the doc about this and he said we are all getting old and that I am still in recovery from all this. Well, I never had this pain during the entire time I was on the meds or anything. I am just trying to figure out if the MRSA might have anything to do with this. I am in constant pain and have swollen fingers and am very miserable. If anyone has info on this please post it I need help!! Thank you very much and I hope to hear from someone.

There are a lot of great responses on here and yes , very debateable. I can't get a str8 answer from the doctor and after reading most of the thread responses I now know why I feel like a Zombie every day. Never enough sleep, very tired all the time, virtually no sex life due to lack of energy and stamina. I beleive I am near the end, at least it feels like it. Anyway thanks for the info and I pray that we all can get the answers we deserve so that we may have a healthy and productive life, Thanks for your support.

Some people need to stay on antibiotics for a year or so. That's what my doctors had me do.
All the joint pain went away slowly over the course of 6 months.

Also did immune building and proper diet. Lots of vitamins and minerals.

Jim:

I think that joint pain, unfortunately, will always be with you. When I asked my surgeon about it, he said it was very common after an HA-MRSA infection. I can't speak for CA-MRSA infections, but its really the same bacteria.

I had osteoarthritis before I got MRSA and was familiar with joint pain. However, this is nothing like the old arthritis. I think its worse. I have pain in all of my lower joints and in my shoulders. My shoulders did a lot of lifting me when I was in braces last year and I think I may have rotor cuff problems. However, I'm sick of surgery and choose to live with it. I no longer take any narcotics. I do take Ibuprofen when the pain is really bad.

I just searched to see if anyone has experienced the pain....and see I am not alone in this. I have had 3 infections. My Picc Line was in 8 weeks & is now out. I am a 46 year old female & got MRSA last Sept. 07' from a breast biopsy & since then have had in breast twice & abdomen once with a 27" incision going around to my back just to drain fluid. Now my joints ache so bad. I feel as though the old me is gone forever. We need support groups for this.

Joan:

I would offer a word of caution: be careful about taking too many pain meds. Few doctors want their patients to be in pain. They are much too liberal with their prescriptions for narcotics. Mine prescribed Percocet for me for well over a year. Addiction to painkillers is a real problem here in the States.

I would expect your Rhumetologist to ultimately prescribe Ibuprofen or perhaps Celebrex. I was on Celebrex for about a year before I ever had any orthopedic surgery. It was only effective for 6 months. After that, it stopped working, gradually over the last 6 months. You may find that exercise and finding more efficient ways of doing normal tasks will give you the relief you need. There are specialists who come into your home and recommend tools and simpler ways of doing household chores.

Here in Scotland Celebrex and Vioxx is not precribed by GPs .

Well, the pain in most of my joints except my wrist and my fingers has calmed down a bit.In the mornings when I wake up I can't bend my fingers or make a fist at all due to the pain and the swelling. Its just too painful. I have to constantly make my way to making a fist by bending my fingers ever so slightly for @ an hour or so. My doctor (pain treatment doc) has me on methadone 5mg, 1 pill 4x daily. No I hardly ever take that many but it is usually in the mornings on the weekends but in the late afternoon s during the week because I cant take it and then go to work. That would be very dangerous. I take only when I need. Also I have to do a pill count when I go back to the doctor every month and I alwasys come up way ahead so I dont think the pain pills are a problem for me. I have been scheduled to see a neurosurgical physician in late october to see why I am continunig t have the pain in my back and left leg and I explain the joint painproblem to her also. I will keep everyone posted on my path to either recovery or possible doom. Thanks for listening and will respond after my appointment. Thanks to everyone that has replied to date. have a great day, Jim.

I did go to my Rhumetologist and he was taken back by my recent history of MRSA & felt that I needed a number of blood tests to determine what was going on in my body. He did agree that MRSA plays havoc on your body and admitted having several patients that came after they had MRSA and that they also had severe "after effects". He ordered a number of tests and after I get the results I will know more & can share if it had any bearing on helping me or in diagnosing me. Stay tuned.

I wish someone would answer me. ? I am in severe
pain everywhere, after almost dieing, and working
40 years. It seems like pain gets worse , i don't
think doctors believe me. That is what happened
when doctors in emergency room would not help me.
I am in pain I take all morning just ttrying to
get moving does anyone else feel like this.
Sometimes I can't walk. And if I take 30 mil. Of
oxy codene I can move or 60 mil, I seem to have
high tolerance to pills, but without meds I can't
hardly move
